14-Year-Old Jaedon Brown’s Writing Talent Earns N.C.B. Foundation’s Support

22 Aug 2024

Kingston, Jamaica – August 22, 2024: Fourteen-year-old Jaedon Brown from Portmore, St Catherine, is a young writer with a passion for storytelling and a determination to overcome challenges. Living with cerebral palsy, Jaedon has faced many obstacles, but his love for writing has been a constant source of strength. Recently, he reached out to the N.C.B. Foundation, seeking help to continue his education and pursue his dreams.

In a letter to the Foundation, Jaedon wrote, "I'm Jaedon Brown, and I'm 14 years old and disabled. I can't walk and talk properly, and I'm requesting a laptop for school to communicate with my caregiver, teachers, and my classmates. The laptop will also help me to facilitate my school work because I have to do my school work on my phone and it's malfunctioning, so the laptop would be a significant source to me. God bless you all."

Jaedon's request went beyond just a need for a device; it was a plea for a chance to succeed. Starting high school at Mona High School this September, Jaedon looks forward to new experiences, using the laptop to connect with his caregivers, complete his schoolwork, and work on his dream of becoming a writer and a Doctor of Business.

His mother, Kimar McFarlane, a hairdresser, expressed her gratitude for the support. "Jaedon has always been determined. He loves writing and has already started working on a book. This laptop is a huge step toward achieving his dream. I just want to see him happy and thriving, and I’ll do everything I can to support him for as long as possible," McFarlane shared.

Jaedon’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. After an incident at school and the temporary absence of his Ministry of Education-appointed caregiver, he had to stop attending classes for a while. Yet, his resilience shone through when he took it upon himself to email the Ministry, securing the help he needed to return to school.

Jamilia Crooks-Brown, Programmes Administrator at N.C.B. Foundation, was moved by Jaedon’s story. “When I read Jaedon’s letter, I was touched by his courage and determination. His passion for writing and his clear vision for his future are truly inspiring. We’re glad to support Jaedon in his journey, and we know this laptop will open up new possibilities for him as he starts high school.”
